FCC Environment starts the operation of the Alt Empordà solid urban waste treatment plant in the province of Gerona

FCC Medio Ambiente (the Spanish brand for FCC Environment) started the operation of the l’Alt Empordà urban waste treatment plant in the north-east of Catalonia in November. A JV led by FCC Medio Ambiente will operate it for 15 years with a contract totalling €75 million.

The centre was inaugurated in July by the former Councillor for Territory and Sustainability of the Government of Catalonia, Josep Rull, in the presence of the General Director of FCC Medio Ambiente, Jordi Payet. The facility has satisfactorily passed its test and guarantee period.

The installation, owned by the Alt Empordà District Council, has been financed entirely by the Catalonian Waste Agency (Agencia de Residuos de Catalana ARC) of the Department of Territory and Sustainability for some €24 million.

The plant started to receive the planned 70,000 tonnes annually from the northern area of the Costa Brava. The area has a stable population of 140,000, a figure which is greatly exceeded during the summer. It is expected that 10,000 tonnes annually will be the organic fraction collected selectively by the municipalities. With the start-up of the waste treatment facility, the Alt Empordà District Council has started the process of the generalised implementation of the separate collection of the organic fraction in all the municipalities in the area.
