FCC Medio Ambiente joins the 360 organisations that have calculated and registered their carbon footprint

For the third year running, FCC Medio Ambiente has registered the calculation of the organisation's carbon footprint in the Spanish National Register of Carbon Footprint, Offsetting and Carbon Dioxide Absorption Projects of the Spanish Climate Change Office (OECC), forming part of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment, in section a) on carbon footprint and commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

FCC Medio Ambiente joins the 360 organisations that have calculated and registered their carbon footprint

Fulfilling its commitments and exceeding its GHG emissions reduction goal, the Spanish Environment division of FCC agreed, in an initial period, to reduce diffuse GHG emissions from landfills and, by means of the measures undertaken voluntarily, managed to achieve a 26.25% reduction in its GHG emissions in landfills in 3 years, exceeding the reduction goal of 16% set in 2013.

Progressing towards a low-carbon economy
In 2011, the Environment Division of FCC started to calculate the carbon footprint of the organisation. Since then, this process has been subject to external verification based on the GHG Protocol, the most used international tool for calculating and communicating the emissions inventory.

Having identified the emissions produced within the organisation's operational range, it is of note that emission sources typical of FCC Medio Ambiente (following the classification of diffuse emissions in the national emissions inventory) are those related to: the transport sector (use of vehicle fleet mainly powered by fossil fuels) with 58% of the GHG emissions; waste sector (CH4 emissions associated with landfill management) with 32.76% of the GHG emissions.

The carbon footprint register confirms the will of a company prepared to transparently communicate information on their strategy regarding reducing GHG emissions, so as to offer low-carbon products and services that are environmentally friendly.

In the transition phase we are going through, and waiting for the local governments to set objectives for the application of the framework agreements regarding adaptation to climate change, FCC Medio Ambiente, as a leading economic actor, will continue promoting the efficient use of resources involving the whole value chain by means of implementing best practices that will bolster its contribution to fulfilling the SDGs on Climate Action.
