Portland Valderrivas presents its 5th Sustainability Report

Cementos Portland Valderrivas Group has published its 5th Sustainability Report, for 2009, a year in which it was ranked as the leading Spanish cement company by the Spanish Monitor of Corporate Reputation (MERCO).

This year, the company printed just an Executive Summary, with the entire document on an attached CD.

This year's report was drafted in accordance with the G3 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines and was verified by KPMG in accordance with the ISAE 3000 standard. The report was submitted to review by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and was assigned an application level of A+. The document summarises the Group's principal actions in 2009 in the area of corporate social responsibility.

The document also covers: the Board of Directors' approval of a new policy to control and manage risks; implementation of Plan 100, to obtain recurring savings of more than ?100mn; adaptation of the factory in Bath, Pennsylvania (US) to the dry process; signature of an Equality Plan; certification of all cement factories in Spain to the OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health & Safety standard; and organisation of the fourth campaign to collect used toys and clothing, and food.

The report also provides extensive details about the Third Round of Consultations with Stakeholders. Almost 400 employees, clients, suppliers and members of civil society were included in these annual consultations; in 2009, employees from the US and Tunisia participated for the first time.

The document highlights Group milestones of the last five years and corporate social responsibility in company management, including: publication of the 1st Sustainability Report in 2005; creation of the corporate social responsibility framework in 2006; commencement of consultations with stakeholders in 2007; and drafting of the group's first Sustainability Plan in 2008.
