Works at phase 2 of the Environmental Complex in Guipúzcoa (CMG-2) are progressing at a good pace. These works are being developed by a JV led by FCC Medio Ambiente (the Spanish subsidiary of the Environmental Services area of the FCC Group) for the province's Waste Management Consortium. The complex has already surpassed 50% of the construction process.

The contract was signed in September 2018 and involves the construction, commissioning and operation of CMG-2 for a period of 20 years, with an investment of 32.2 million euro and an order book value estimated at 92 million euro. The new facility will have two types of plants: a biomethanisation plant and a slag recycling plant for the incineration bottom ashes received from the waste-to-energy plant in phase 1 (CMG-1). The facility is expected to begin operations in summer 2019.

The CMG-2 will be located in the Industrial Estate of Eskuzaitzeta, region of Zubieta, on a plot with a gross floor area of 31,988 sqm. Its two plants (biomethanisation and slag recycling), together with the mechanical-biological treatment (MBT) and energy recovery (WtE) processes of the CMG-1, make up the basic waste treatment systems used in Guipúzcoa.

The commissioning of these facilities will also have a direct impact on the selective collection and recycling rates, thanks to the recovery of materials at the mechanical-biological treatment plant and to the manufacturing of recycled aggregates at the slag treatment plant described in the project. The new infrastructures will allow the Guipúzcoa Consortium to keep the same fees and improve the waste recycling and reusage indices by seven to eight points in the Province, which will reach 60%, in line with the figures of the leading countries in Europe and clearly exceeding the 50% objective set forth for Europe by 2020.
