Cuenca City Council awards the waste collection and road cleaning contract to FCC Environment.

Cuenca City Council and FCC Medio Ambiente (the Spanish brand of FCC Environment) have signed a ten-year contract for the solid urban waste collection and transport and street cleansing services, and the management of the Civic Amenity Site, all with an order book value of EUR 36.4 million. FCC has been delivering services to the city for the past 22 years. To serve the city´s nearly 55,000 inhabitants, FCC will count with a staff of around 100 people of which at least seven employees will be hired from a special employment center for disabled staff. Moreover, new more efficient, quieter and less polluting equipment featuring the latest technologies will be acquired to collect close to 19,000 tons of waste per year, including four heavy-duty collection units, two small collection units, one container washing unit and a tipper. The collection service handling the waste of the Historic District, declared a Heritage Site by the UNESCO, was designed to meet the most demanding requirements; in this case, reduced width vehicles will be used, with the support of soundproofed and eco-friendly satellite container loading vehicles, using as many electric vehicles as possible. Containers will be fireproof in areas of special interest for tourists. After 1 January 2020, organic waste will be collected in the fourth container across the city. New street washers, road and pavement sweepers, trolleys, water tankers, hydro-cleaning vans and auxiliary electric sweeping vehicles will be used for the city's cleaning service. The auxiliary machinery used will include wire brush cutters, pesticide and gum cleaning backpack sprayers, backpack blowers and sandbox cleaning and disinfection equipment. The scope of the cleaning plan has been significantly expanded in a city at an altitude of 1,000 metres above sea level and with steep slopes in many of its streets, covering special cases, such as winter weather and installing salt containers on streets from which neighbours can take the ice melting salt. A special waste collection and cleaning service will also be provided during Easter. A door-to-door waste collection service will be provided at the shopping area and a daily placing, emptying and removal service for clean waste containers will be delivered on pedestrian streets. An information system platform that will be specifically designed for the city will be implemented to achieve the comprehensive control and management of all services included in the contract. Finally, the citizen and tourist information and communication systems will be upgraded (website, mobile app, etc.).
