FCC to extend Athens Metro Line 2 (Greece)

FCC Construcción, in a joint venture with J&P AVAX, Greece's second-largest construction company, has been awarded the contract to extend Line 2 of Athens Metro. The contract is worth 94,509,800 euro and construction will take 32.5 months.

The line extension, in north-west Athens, is 1,380 metres long and will run from Agios Antonios to Anthoupoli, including the Peristeri and Anthoupoli stations, which will be built by the cut and cover method.

A 300-metre section of tunnel will be dug using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method and two ventilation shafts will be sunk and connected to the tunnel via a gallery.

Peristeri station, 112 metres long and 24 metres below ground, will have three levels: ticket booths, turnstiles and platforms. Above ground, there will be two entrances on either side of the avenue.

Anthoupoli station, 147 metres long and 20 metres below ground, will consist of two levels: ticket booths and turnstiles on one level and platforms on the other.

The contract also includes the superstructure, 1,390 metres of double slab track, and refurbishment of the existing track at Agios Antonios station, plus electrical engineering, fire detection and control systems, ventilation, elevators, escalators, etc.

Other projects

FCC to build and operate Málaga Metro Lines 1 and 2 under a 35-year contract. This is the largest public works contract ever awarded in Andalucía and the second-largest Metro system under concession in Spain (after the Seville Metro). The contract envisages 13.6 kilometres of network, nine underground stations and 3 overground stations.

In Madrid, FCC is to execute a number of projects on Madrid Metro Line 3, including integrating it with the planned renovation of the Moncloa terminus, enabling the line to be extended to Cuatro Caminos; extension of the section between Legazpi and San Cristóbal de los Ángeles (5,701 metres underground), construction of five new stations, adaptation of the Legazpi station and improvement of the connections with line 6, and construction of the San Cristóbal de los Ángeles-Villaverde Alto section (2.8 kilometres).

In Barcelona, FCC is undertaking a number of projects, including the Horta-Vall d'Hebrón section of Metro Line 5 (2,500 metres, and 2 stations), as well as various works on Line 9 including the last 3.1 km section of the line (2.85 km. using a tunnel-boring machine); the Bon Pastor-Can Zam section (4,290 metres), the Zona Universitaria - Sagrera tunnel (8,998 metres) and the accesses to the railway triangle, infrastructure and stations.
