Esther Alcocer Koplowitz, Chair of Grupo FCC and Marquise of Casa Peñalver, attended the 2026 Princess of Asturias Awards ceremony on Friday 23 October at the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo, reaffirming the company’s commitment as a trustee of the Foundation that organises these prestigious awards.

Their Majesties the King and Queen, accompanied by the Princess of Asturias and the Infanta Doña Sofía, presided over the solemn ceremony, attended by Her Majesty Queen Doña Sofía. This is one of the year’s most important cultural and institutional events. The ceremony brought together prominent figures and representatives from various sectors of society.

At this year’s ceremony, the awards recognised Patti Smith in the Arts; Studio Ghibli in Communication and the Humanities; David Klenerman, Shankar Balasubramanian and Pascal Mayer in Scientific and Technical Research; the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in International Cooperation; Timothy Garton Ash, in Social Sciences; Leo Messi, in Sport; Julian Barnes, in Literature; and Christina Koch, in Concord.

The Princess of Asturias Foundation organises these awards annually – considered one of the country’s most significant cultural events – to honour outstanding careers and contributions in the scientific, technical, cultural, social and humanitarian fields. Throughout their history, the Princess of Asturias Awards have received significant international recognition, including from UNESCO, which in 2004 highlighted their exceptional contribution to the cultural heritage of humanity.
